About juvenile arthritis
Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is the most common cause of chronic disability in children in Canada. 24,000 kids – or every 3 in 1000 – are affected. That’s just as common as juvenile diabetes and far more prevalent than leukemia, cystic fibrosis and other “better-known” childhood conditions.
Despite being so common, most people still aren’t aware that kids can get arthritis. Because of that lack of awareness, many children will endure months of debilitating pain (written off as growing pains, sports injuries or even behavioural issues) before being referred to a specialist. This can have serious consequences for a child’s growing body and can lead to life-long disability.
JA is not just a kid-sized version of adult arthritis; it’s a severe, inflammatory disease that, when left untreated, can lead to blindness, inflamed organs, permanent disability, anxiety and even depression – not to mention a stolen childhood. There are no cures and few treatments are safe and effective for a growing child.
