The global rheumatology community has joined forces to address these issues &#8211; on March 12, 2020 the <a href=\"https:\/\/rheum-covid.org\/\">COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance (GRA)<\/a> was formed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Global Rheumatology Alliance Graphic\" class=\"wp-image-15866 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Global Rheumatology Alliance Graphic\" class=\"wp-image-15866 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2-1536x768.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/arthritisbroadcastnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Global-Rheumatology-Alliance.jpeg-copy-2.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rheumnow.com\/content\/global-rheumatology-alliance-registry-will-study-covid-19\">RheumNow<\/a> posted a feature article on the GRA stating, \u201crealizing that there is an unprecedented and urgent need for data for patients and rheumatologists, the goal of the Global Rheumatology Alliance (GRA) is to develop and rapidly deploy an open physician driven registry for patients with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions with COVID-19 infection.\u201d In other words, the registry created by the Alliance will compile data on patients with rheumatic diseases who have contracted COVID-19; the registry will be secure and  anonymized. Collection and analysis of this data will help doctors to understand the impact of the virus on this population and determine best practices for rheumatology during this time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As\nyou may know, some anecdotal evidence has recently emerged on the use of\nhydroxychloroquine, a common medication used in inflammatory arthritis, as a\nform of treatment for COVID-19. There is currently not enough evidence to\nsupport this claim. Sub-groups of the GRA will be investigating it further and\nalso assessing the role of other rheumatic medications as treatment for the\nvirus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GRA has been endorsed by important bodies of knowledge in arthritis such as the American College of Rheumatology and the European League Against Rheumatism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who\nis involved in the GRA? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ninitiative is being led by Dr. Philip Robinson, clinical and academic\nrheumatologist at the Royal Brisbane hospital in Australia, and Dr. Jinoos\nYazdany, Chief of Rheumatology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and\nEndowed Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GRA has been rapidly expanding since its formation on March 12<sup>th<\/sup>. Currently, it is comprised of nearly 300 members including rheumatologists, epidemiologists, immunologists, and patient representatives from across the globe. One of these patient representatives is Cheryl Koehn, Founder and President of <a href=\"https:\/\/jointhealth.org\/index.cfm?locale=en-CA\">Arthritis Consumer Experts <\/a>, who is actively involved in this initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe work of the&nbsp;COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance&nbsp;is not only hugely important now, it will generate knowledge for our patient population for decades to come,\u201d says Koehn. \u201cThe data collected by the&nbsp;Alliance will help&nbsp;answer many of the questions patients around the world are asking: What happens if I get the virus? Do I have to stop my therapies and for how long?&nbsp;We are really encouraging Canadian rheumatologists to enroll their patients into the registry.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ACE will be publishing information collected by the GRA as it\nbecomes available.
