Today is the start of the Canadian Rheumatology Association and Arthritis Health Professions Association Annual Scientific Meeting! Arthritis Broadcast Network will be sharing #CRArthritis interviews with you throughout the conference.
Below is a summary of the interviews we are sharing today with Cheryl Koehn, Dr. Jasmin Ma, Dr. Jill Horton, Dr. Sasha Bernatsky, and Kara Irwin.
Interview 1 - 10th Annual #CRArthritis Event with Ms. Cheryl Koehn
Cheryl Koehn, ACE’s President provides the background for the annual #CRArthritis event, building on the tremendous success of our previous Facebook/X Live Events at the Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA)/Arthritis Health Professional Association (AHPA) annual meetings in Canada. As the largest arthritis health care provider event in the country, this meeting holds immense value for patients and health care professionals.
Interview 2 - Improving strength training and tailoring among people with rheumatoid arthritis with Dr. Jasmin Ma
Dr. Ma, Assistant Professor of Teaching in the School of Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia, defines what strength training is and explains the benefits of it for people living with rheumatoid arthritis. She shares what is important to consider before coming up with an exercise plan, some barriers to physical activity, and how the I START tool can help health care providers tailor exercise prescription for people living with rheumatoid arthritis.
Interview 3 - Critical frameworks for tackling the burnout crisis with Dr. Jillian Horton
Dr. Horton, an award-winning medical educator, writer, musician, and podcaster, previews her keynote lecture on critical frameworks for tackling our burnout crisis. She also shares what she's witnessed as a doctor and the necessity for compassion for both healthcare workers as well as those on the receiving end of healthcare.
Interview 4 - Antimalarials in rheumatology with Dr. Sasha Bernatsky
Dr. Bernatsky, rheumatologist, James McGill professor, and senior scientist in the Centre for Health Outcomes Research and Division of Clinical Epidemiology at the Research Institute of the MUHC, discusses the crucial role antimalarials such as hydroxychloroquine play in the management of inflammatory arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis, offering a favorable balance between efficacy and safety. The benefits of these medications include slowing down disease progression, reducing joint pain and protecting against organ damage, especially in systemic lupus erythematosus.
Interview 5 - Acute care use remains high despite advances in management of inflammatory arthritis conditions and gout with Ms. Kara Irwin
Ms. Irwin, research trainee at Arthritis Research Canada, looks at how higher rates and frequencies of emergency visits and hospitalizations for patients with inflammatory arthritis and gout have negative impacts for both patient health outcomes and healthcare costs.
